Originally from Buenos Aires, Silvia Brewda trained as a National Painting Teacher. Her career is marked by a diversity of expressions ranging from paintings and works on paper to installations and murals, as well as objects, artist’s books and textiles. With a career that dates back to 1978, she has exhibited in cultural spaces inside and outside her native country, including museums, galleries and renowned institutions. The year 2023 marked a significant milestone with the presentation of the book Silvia Brewda at the Asociación Amigos del Bellas Artes, curated by Rodrigo Alonso and Laura Casanovas, and with the outstanding presence of the editor Natalia Silberleib. Continuing with experimentation and collaboration, in 2024 she participated in our micro-Residency programme.

In addition to her artistic practice, Silvia has dedicated decades to teaching, guiding and nurturing students of all levels. Her work as an advisor for projects, exhibitions and competitions, as well as the coordination of practical-theoretical seminars, reflect her deep commitment to the dissemination and growth of art.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Art is the fabric of my growth as a woman and as a person, a growth that unfolds on three fundamental, parallel and interrelated axes: my artistic career, the construction of my family and teaching. My approach is dynamic, I need to work on playful aspects. They are flexible works, they can be one and many at the same time. I interrelate the two-dimensional with the three-dimensional, I make several works at the same time, a lithograph, an artist’s book, a drawing, a textile, a fretwork… As for my work, my production develops in an order of space and time, the location, the light, the frequency, these parameters organise certain rituals of making. I classify materials, I explore, I read, I take photos, I write. My tools are the dot and the line. The latter is rhythmic, automatic, modulated and enveloping, it comes and goes. I play with construction, layer upon layer and deconstruction, reusing and transforming.

The Latin America's Paris

Buenos Aires is Argentine Republic's capital city. With 15,000,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in Latin America and one of the 10 most populous urban centers in the world. Its cosmopolitan and urban character vibrates to the rhythm of a great cultural offer that includes monuments, churches, museums, art galleries, opera, music and theaters; squares, parks and gardens with old groves; characteristic neighborhoods; large shopping centers and fairs. Here we also find a very good lodging facilities, with accommodation ranging from hostels to five-star hotels of the main international chains. Buenos Aires also show off about its variety of restaurants with all the cuisines of the world, as well as to have cafes and flower kiosks on every corner.

A neighborhood founded on the Jesuit farms in the 17th century

We are located in Colegiales neighborhood where the tree-lined streets, some of which still have their original cobblestones, invite you to walk. Although the apartment buildings advance, low houses still predominate. It is a district of the city where about 20 TV production companies, design studios, artist workshops and the Rock&Pop radio have been located. The neighborhood also has six squares, one of which pays homage to Mafalda, the Flea Market, shops, restaurants and cafes like its neighboring Barrios de Palermo and Belgrano, with which it limits.
