Sally Brown
Feminist Tribute

15.05.23 23.05.23

Sally Jane Brown is an artist, curator and writer currently based in Morgantown. Her artwork uses drawing, painting, and performance to explore womanhood, motherhood, and the body. She has exhibited her work in the US and in the UK, has won two awards for illustration, and participated in artist residences in Tennessee, Pennsylvania and Buenos Aires. She holds a Bachelor of Arts-Studio Art, a Master of Public Administration and Master of Arts- Art History and Feminist Theory, and currently serves as Exhibits Coordinator for West Virginia University Libraries. In her own words, “I create body prints alternatively with feminist intent, as director, artist, and model, dedicated to women artists before and around me, in abstract, expressive forms reminiscent of inkblot tests. Using my body, my work initiates conversations on gender and body image, as well as my role as mother. I recognize similar cries from other women artists and that my frustrations and celebrations are not unique. Along with body prints, I have developed several series of tributes to feminist artists scripting their ideas, titles or text and depicting their style through form and color, in painting, collage drawing, and now, printmaking. My works, I hope, are intimate, personable, playful and connect to the viewer as just another (sensual) person, doing inner work, but not alone.”

Sally came to ´ace to develop her pieces in our workshop, reconnecting with the medium of printmaking. Once in Buenos Aires, and after her first couple of museum visits, she decided to make a new series of prints in honor of local artists Martina Minujin and Liliana Maresca. She started out by researching their work, careers and styles, she then reviewed her own work, self portraits, and materials available, and drafted some ideas for this print series. Once in the workshop, her larger figurative element was integrated with linocuts to produce a series of prints with text inspired by Maresca.

The Latin America's Paris

Buenos Aires is Argentine Republic's capital city. With 15,000,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in Latin America and one of the 10 most populous urban centers in the world. Its cosmopolitan and urban character vibrates to the rhythm of a great cultural offer that includes monuments, churches, museums, art galleries, opera, music and theaters; squares, parks and gardens with old groves; characteristic neighborhoods; large shopping centers and fairs. Here we also find a very good lodging facilities, with accommodation ranging from hostels to five-star hotels of the main international chains. Buenos Aires also show off about its variety of restaurants with all the cuisines of the world, as well as to have cafes and flower kiosks on every corner.

A neighborhood founded on the Jesuit farms in the 17th century

We are located in Colegiales neighborhood where the tree-lined streets, some of which still have their original cobblestones, invite you to walk. Although the apartment buildings advance, low houses still predominate. It is a district of the city where about 20 TV production companies, design studios, artist workshops and the Rock&Pop radio have been located. The neighborhood also has six squares, one of which pays homage to Mafalda, the Flea Market, shops, restaurants and cafes like its neighboring Barrios de Palermo and Belgrano, with which it limits.
