Julián Matta is an visual artist who currently works as a lecturer at the National University of the Northeast, Corrientes, Argentina.. He was born in Chaco, Argentina, who earned the opportunity to carry out a micro-residency through the award Premio Arte Vittal in 2015. During the time he carried out the micro-Residency, he was re-thinking the work he had produced in the past in order to structure and focus his future works. We collaborated in the conceptualisation of his work as well as in the application process for the international opportunities.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I am a multidisciplinary artist. I studied film and my thoughts are structured within the classic narrative. I work with drawing, painting, video, film and site-specific. I am interested in showing the process of construction of the work with an ironic and cynical tone. I also seek to experiment with shape in order to reveal its artifice. I believe that my work is constantly in progress and I try to integrate the viewer, dialogue with him or her. I research mechanisms of seduction and manipulation in mass culture: classic Disney animation, superheroes archetypes and Hollywood stories.

In 2015 my visual and narrative concerns led me to assemble a team of audiovisual productions as an intervention to a room as a film set. Building a tour through a lugubrious and decadent atmosphere, drawing a blurry line between representation and the represented.

The Latin America's Paris

Buenos Aires is Argentine Republic's capital city. With 15,000,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in Latin America and one of the 10 most populous urban centers in the world. Its cosmopolitan and urban character vibrates to the rhythm of a great cultural offer that includes monuments, churches, museums, art galleries, opera, music and theaters; squares, parks and gardens with old groves; characteristic neighborhoods; large shopping centers and fairs. Here we also find a very good lodging facilities, with accommodation ranging from hostels to five-star hotels of the main international chains. Buenos Aires also show off about its variety of restaurants with all the cuisines of the world, as well as to have cafes and flower kiosks on every corner.

A neighborhood founded on the Jesuit farms in the 17th century

We are located in Colegiales neighborhood where the tree-lined streets, some of which still have their original cobblestones, invite you to walk. Although the apartment buildings advance, low houses still predominate. It is a district of the city where about 20 TV production companies, design studios, artist workshops and the Rock&Pop radio have been located. The neighborhood also has six squares, one of which pays homage to Mafalda, the Flea Market, shops, restaurants and cafes like its neighboring Barrios de Palermo and Belgrano, with which it limits.
