Tableau Vivant
16.08.16 02.09.16
In August 2016, the ´acePIRAR program received artist Jae Min Kim (South Korea). Jae currently works as an Art Director at M and as a lecturer at the Korea National University of Arts, Seoul, South Korea. He is the second artist-in-residence from Korea, being this very important for the program as it means broadening our scope in Asia as well as our knowledge about Korean culture and art.
Kim is a theatre director and media artist and he leads two theatrical troops: Spider Company and M. His works range on various genres such as SF and Korean traditional performance. In the visual art field, he looks forward to expand the practices between different artistic practices, and specially among theatre and media art as well as the way to interfere with the exhibition format.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My project’s title, Tableau Vivant, means “living picture”. It’s a media art project that combines photography and videography. It is based on the placeness, the overlapping temporalities in massive photographic images, using it as a screen and accepting it at the same time in the term of proscenium. Through video projection mapping on the image, the project gains new life.
Tableau Vivant‘s process is similar to theatrical directing; project’s placeness, mediality and theatricality can refer to the work of actors’ direction or scenography itself. It draws meditational landscape through the awareness of conscious/unconscious memories. One can place its own message in relation to the project’s purpose, arriving to another unexpected meaning.
This residency has been possible thanks to the generous support of the Wooran Foundation.

Tableau Vivant
Jae Min Kim
31.08.16 21.10.16
On August 31st we presented the multimedia project developed by artist-in-residency Jae Min Kim (South Korea). Tableau-Vivant is a project series that Kim has been working on during recent years, and for his residency at ´ace he worked on Tableau-Vivant: Severance. Presented at the Polígota Room, this piece consists of two large photographs of the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, one overlooking the Casa Rosada and the other towards the Pirámide de Mayo (May Pyramid). The particular thing is that both present this view from behind the bars which had been installed in the Plaza in order to “protect” the monuments from social demonstrations in recent years.
Over these photographs, Kim has made a mapping projection, showing people walking through the space, acrobats on bars, giant hands with threatening and hypnotising gestures. Thus, by joining and superimposing these two means and bringing different time frames, the artist suggests different stories and scenes in this environment that is strongly symbolic for the Argentinean history. In the words of Kim “Through mapping, images take on new life.”
For this project, Kim conducted a thorough research before and during the residency. The Plaza de Mayo is a point of interest for the artist as it is contrasting with the situation in his own country, if we think of the fact that due to the war, Sout Korea has been rebuilt again, somehow erasing the marks of history and memory.

Artists in Dialogue
31.08.16
Projections was the title of the ´aceNITE of August 31st, where we presented diverse works by artists from Argentina and other countries. This set of exhibitions is an example and a particular point of view on the fact that space and reconstruction of memory are universal issues that cross all regions and are part of us all.
In the Políglota Room of the ´ace studio was held a multimedia installation by the artist in residence Jae Kim Kim (South Korea), titled Tableau Vivant: Severance. The Central Hall and Dialogue Space presented an installation from the Argentinean artist collective Malditas Culebras, Re/Construction of oblivion. The Transversal Space was, once again, space for national art schools. This time we presented the work of Jimena Aelen, Damiano Atencio, Marina Blustein, Amalia Cecilia Cambieri and Paulo Cosentino, students prom the Chair Flores of Visual Lanugage at the Universidad Nacional de las Artes National University of Arts( U.N.A).
