For the ´aceNITE of November 2016, South Korean artist Min-Hyung Kang presented a site-specific installation in the Dialogue Space of the ´ace house, which she called El ojo de halcón, Spanish for The Eye of the Hawk.
ABOUT THE EYE OF THE HAWK
Goshiwon, the smallest urban housing in South Korea, are located in the very center of the city with cheap rent of 200-400 USD a month, usually for students who prepare public official exams or anyone who wants to live close to the city for saving money and time. This housing are about 2 square meters, 1 bathroom is shared by 30 people. This is not a slum, community house, nor dorm. Here people don’t speak to each other and are separated by a thin fake wall, as if they didn’t exist for each other. Goshiwon and the material of its wall with temporary-of-the-art technology, cheap wall stickers which its pattern is not even matched to each other, fake nature objects, the discrepancy between real wood and fake, an eye of the hawk, are all city aesthetics that we live with.
The Eye of the Hawk is a innovative product by the famous security company Prosegur, by which you can talk to or be seen by a digital watchman through a monitor in your building. It is “a precise look for your safety. Multiple cameras and an electronic device with state-of-the-art technology are installed in the entrance hall. The electronic module has a screen and a bidirectional communication system (audio and video), which will allow whoever enters the building or transit in the hall area, interact with the watchman 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
Due to many eyes targeting ´ace’s security, no one has ever seen the sign of Proyecto´ace up since its foundation. On the opening day, a sign that can never be hung will be watched by digital and human eyes of hawk.
This installation was co-worked with Nieves Varela and German Gaspari.
