OPEN Buenos Aires 2023
Activities timeline

17.06.23 20.06.23

OPEN Buenos Aires is a professionalization event for emerging artists who work with printmaking in a broad and expanded sense. In this second edition, the event occupies once again the Edificio La Prensa–Casa de la Cultura (in the same spaces where the graphic workshops of the newspaper La Prensa used to be) during a long weekend in which activities aimed both at artists (mentoring, portfolio review, professional advice on mounting, networking, etc.) and the public of the City of Buenos Aires (exhibition of works, workshops/demonstrations given by the artists themselves, open lectures, and more) were carried out free of charge.

TIMELINE
SATURDAY, JUNE 17

  • 17.30 hrs | VIP OPENING (guided tour by David Arteagoitia, director Open Portfolio FIGBilbao)
  • 18.30 hs | OPENING TO THE PUBLIC
  • 19.00 hs | OPENING – WELCOME SPEECHES
  • 19.30 hs | GUIDED TOUR FOR THE ATTENDING PUBLIC (open to the general public)
Approach to contemporary graphics through the selected artists, by Luciano Pozo
  • 20.00 hs | ACTIVATION – DESPOSEÍDES (by Aniela Troglia, OPEN 2023 artist)
Aiming to explore the transformation of the value of money through a simple action, and thus questioning its original purpose, the artist invites spectators to hand in a bill of their choice and value. She then stamps the bill with one of the available designs, thus creating a unique work of art. Spectators take away a signed and serialized graphic work as a result of the intervention.
  • 21.00 hs | CLOSING OF THE ROOM

SUNDAY, JUNE 18

  • 4:00 p.m. OPENING OF ROOMS TO THE PUBLIC
  • 16.00 hs | PRINTING JAM IN TWO STATIONS
STATION 1 PRINTING MATTERS: words and actions that empower (by Mariana Gayoso, OPEN 2022 artist)
Aimed at the general public, this action allows visitors to approach the notions of contemporary art through graphic experimentation. From the creation of posters printed by themselves, we will work on the idea of engraving as a tool for social communication.
STATION 2 THE MAGIC OF XYLOGRAPHY: creative workshop led by Laura Pires and Hernán Borches (OPEN 2023 artists)
Aimed at all audiences, this workshop will explore the mechanisms of difference and repetition in graphic printing with woodcuts, textures and shapes. The public will be able to analyze prints, create compositions and experiment with transparencies and superimpositions on vegetal papers, stimulating their creativity.
  • 4:00 pm : PORTFOLIOS REVIEW (activity with previous registration for artists of all levels)

  • 13.00 hs | GYOTAKU 3D WORKSHOP: dimensional traces
Led by OPEN 2023 artists Santiago Crespo and Candela del Valle, this workshop proposes to discover how scanning and printing devices interpret and represent reality. Through practical demonstrations, we will explore the singularity with which different devices process the same data, scanning objects and observing their 3D printing. We will also analyze the reconstruction of spaces as a reproducible matrix and while we dive into methodologies of cartographic representation and reproduction of images in a sensitive way. Bring your favorite object!
  • 14.00 hs | ACTIVATION – TEMPORARY ARCHIVES (aimed at all audiences)
Amelia Herrero (OPEN 2023 artist) will print the work “Temporary Archives” live in front of the public, allowing them to learn about some printing processes and their possibilities by completing the work during the course of the exhibition.
  • 14.30 hs | FLORISGRAPHY WORKSHOP (open to the public)
Luciano Pozo (OPEN 2023 artist) dictates a floristic printing workshop on petals of roses, magnolias, sunflowers, floripondios and any other type of flower that the public wants to print. This workshop hopes to share with the public an instance of manual printing where the importance of pressure and manipulation of organic objects to make a print is socialized. Whoever prints gets to take their own print with them.
  • 14.30 hs | GRAPHIC STROPHES WORKSHOP: visual poetry workshop (aimed at all audiences)
Led by OPEN 2023 artists Gabriela Esterovich and Inés Díaz Saubidet, participants will be able to choose pre-printed words and images as a “data bank” or print their own creations using techniques such as collage, stencil and frottage. Collective construction is encouraged in a creative play space similar to an “exquisite corpse”.
  • 16.00 hs | WORKSHOP BETWEEN LIGHT AND NATURE: cyanotype and chlorotypes demo

Aimed at all audiences, Inés Gaggero (OPEN 2023 artist) will give a workshop to introduce us to the alchemical world of Lithography. Aimed at all audiences. Dario Marroche and Pablo Perez Torres (OPEN 2023 artists) will merge two forms of artistic expression and artivism: the poster and the fanzine. The Latin America's Paris

Buenos Aires is Argentine Republic's capital city. With 15,000,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in Latin America and one of the 10 most populous urban centers in the world. Its cosmopolitan and urban character vibrates to the rhythm of a great cultural offer that includes monuments, churches, museums, art galleries, opera, music and theaters; squares, parks and gardens with old groves; characteristic neighborhoods; large shopping centers and fairs. Here we also find a very good lodging facilities, with accommodation ranging from hostels to five-star hotels of the main international chains. Buenos Aires also show off about its variety of restaurants with all the cuisines of the world, as well as to have cafes and flower kiosks on every corner.

A neighborhood founded on the Jesuit farms in the 17th century

We are located in Colegiales neighborhood where the tree-lined streets, some of which still have their original cobblestones, invite you to walk. Although the apartment buildings advance, low houses still predominate. It is a district of the city where about 20 TV production companies, design studios, artist workshops and the Rock&Pop radio have been located. The neighborhood also has six squares, one of which pays homage to Mafalda, the Flea Market, shops, restaurants and cafes like its neighboring Barrios de Palermo and Belgrano, with which it limits.
