During our November 2023 open studio event, we had the privilege of hosting actress and writer Carmen de la Osa alongside guitarist Juan Savizki, who presented a captivating recital of poems from “Ropavieja” (Ed. Dieciséis), a book authored by our resident artist, Lana Corujo.
“Ropavieja” stands as a poignant collection of verses delving into themes of inheritance, caregiving, and the complex roles of daughters who find themselves assuming the maternal mantle for their own mothers. Within its poetic framework, sometimes akin to a narrative, sometimes to a fable, the specters of illness and absence are personified under the guise of Caraperro. It’s a work that traverses the landscape of mourning prematurely, as Lana herself articulates, reflecting the intricate interplay of patience and the perpetual reassessment of one’s perspective.
Lana’s writing is profoundly visual, a testament to her keen powers of observation. While she may be reserved in her speech amidst a crowd, her attentiveness to the world around her is unwavering. While Lana acknowledges that artistic creations need not always mirror autobiographical elements, she acknowledges that in crafting this collection of poems, she found herself channeling a wealth of personal emotions. As she puts it, “I was able to release a torrent of pent-up feelings, as although I’ve been in the role of caregiver, I’ve also endured it, discovering its profound significance along the way.”
